LOCAL CITATIONS

Do Local Citations Still Matter for Local SEO?

A practical explanation of what citations can support, what they cannot guarantee, and when citation work is worth doing.

The useful answer

Local citations can support local search by making business information easier to verify and discover across third-party sites. Their value is stronger when the listings are credible, relevant, and accurate.

Quantity is not a guarantee

“More citations” is not a safe proxy for “better rankings.” A large set of low-value, irrelevant, or inaccurate listings can add work without adding meaningful visibility.

When citation work makes sense

Foundational citation building is sensible for new businesses, businesses with weak directory coverage, agencies launching local campaigns, and companies that have recently changed names, addresses, or phone numbers.

When to look elsewhere

If major listings are already accurate and the business has broader weaknesses in reviews, local content, links, Google Business Profile completeness, or technical SEO, those areas may deserve more attention than additional citation volume.
